Madurai is the third major city in Tamil Nadu and the 31st urban cluster in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the banks of River Vaigai, Madurai has been a major settlement for two eras and is one of the oldest continuously populated cities in the world. Madurai is built around the Meenakshi Amman Temple, which acted as the topographical and ritual center of the ancient city of Madurai. The city is divided into a number of streets around the temples.
With the arrival of British rule during the 19th century, Madurai became the center of operations of a large colonial political complex and an industrial town and with urbanization the social hierarchical classes were fused.
Madurai has been an academic center of learning for Tamil culture, literature, art, music and dance for centuries. The American College is the oldest college in Madurai, and was established in 1881 by American Christian missionaries. There are 47 approved institutions of the university in and around the city.

  • By Air -- Madurai Airport is one of the most important airports in Tamil Nadu. It is situated 12 kilometers away from the city. It offers international services to Colombo, Sri Lanka and Duabi.
  • By Rail -- Madurai junction is an important railway junction in Tamil Nadu and constitutes a separate division of the Southern Railway. Madurai is well connected with some of the major cities in India.
